What is ABN Lookup Australia? ABN Lookup is the free government search tool that lets anyone check whether an Australian Business Number (ABN) is active, who holds it and whether that business is registered for GST.

The tool sits on top of the Australian Business Register (ABR), the official database operated by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). According to the ABR, “ABN Lookup gives you free access to public Australian Business Number (ABN) information from the Australian Business Register.” No login is required, and the search takes seconds.

Key Facts

  • ABN Lookup is a free government search on abr.business.gov.au that shows whether an ABN is active or cancelled, the entity type and the GST status.
  • The ABN is an 11-digit number introduced on July 1, 2000 under Prime Minister John Howard’s government as part of a tax reform that included the GST.
  • According to the Australian Business Register website, the ABN Lookup tool has served more than 1.1 billion searches in the last 10 months, with over 83% of those searches run through the web tool.
  • Businesses must update their ABN details within 28 days if anything changes or the business stops operating.
  • The first two digits of an ABN are a checksum, calculated using a modulus 89 formula that the ATO has published.

What Is ABN Lookup Australia Used For?

ABN Lookup Australia is used to verify business identities before money or contracts change hands. The ABR lists four main user groups: the public, checking a business before buying; businesses, checking suppliers, partners or their own details; accountants, tax agents and advisers, verifying business information; and government agencies, confirming business identity.

A search can tell you several things at once. The ABR says users can check if an ABN is active or cancelled, see the business type and GST status, view the public details provided to the ABR, and see historical trading names where available.

That matters in practice. An invoice that quotes a cancelled ABN, or a supplier whose GST registration does not match what they told you, is a warning sign worth catching before payment.

How Do You Check an ABN in Australia?

You check an ABN by searching the official ABN Lookup tool with the 11-digit number, the ACN or the business name. Searching by number is the most accurate route, because names can be similar or spelled differently.

  1. Go to the official ABR website and open ABN Lookup.
  2. Enter the 11-digit ABN if you have it. If not, search by business name or ACN instead.
  3. Review the record: entity name, registration status (active or cancelled), entity type and GST status.
  4. Cross-check the details against the invoice, contract or website you were given.
  5. Save evidence for your records, such as a screenshot of the result and the date you checked it.

If the name on the record does not match the name you were quoted, pause. It may be a different trading name, a related entity inside a group, or a genuine mismatch that points to a scam or an error.

For a deeper walkthrough of the search itself, our guide on ABN Lookup Australia: how to check any ABN, ACN or business name covers every search method in detail.

ABN vs ACN: What Is the Difference?

An ABN identifies a business for tax and invoicing purposes, while an ACN identifies a company registered under the Corporations Act. Many entity types can hold an ABN; only companies registered with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) have an ACN.

Feature ABN ACN
Who has one Sole traders, partnerships, companies, trusts, non-profits Only companies registered with ASIC
Digits 11 digits 9 digits
Main purpose Invoicing, GST, PAYG, business dealings Company compliance and legal identity

If the ABN Lookup record shows the entity type is a company, it will usually display the linked ACN as well. That is the entity you would be enforcing against if a contract went wrong.

What Can ABN Lookup Not Confirm?

An active ABN proves a registration exists, not that a business is sound. As Sprintlaw puts it, “ABN Lookup can confirm a business registration, but it should not be the only check before you trade, sign contracts or rely on a supplier.”

The ABR also warns that its information depends on businesses keeping their details current. An active ABN can still belong to a financially stressed or poorly run business. For larger transactions, Sprintlaw recommends additional checks such as ASIC records, licences, the Personal Property Securities Register and written contracts.

Think of the lookup as a baseline identity check. Insurance, references and contract terms are separate questions.

How Do You Find, Update or Cancel Your Own ABN?

You can find your own ABN through the same ABN Lookup tool by searching your business name, or by checking official government documentation sent to your business. Even an inactive ABN still appears in the results, and reactivating it requires a fresh online application.

Applying for an ABN is free through the Australian Business Register. According to WorldFirst, most applicants find out straight away whether the application succeeded. If it is flagged for review, it can take up to 20 business days, and a refusal comes with a letter within 14 days explaining why.

Once registered, the obligations are clear. The ABR states you must update your ABN within 28 days if your details change or your business stops operating, and your ABN may be cancelled if records show you are no longer carrying on a business. Updates are made online using myGovID, and changes usually take effect immediately.

You must cancel your ABN if you sell the business, stop operating in Australia, or change your business structure, such as moving from sole trader to company. Cancelling the ABN also cancels related tax registrations such as GST automatically.

FAQ

Is ABN Lookup free to use?

Yes. ABN Lookup is a free government service on the Australian Business Register website, and it does not require an account or login. Anyone can search by ABN, ACN or business name and view the public registration details without paying a fee.

Can I search ABN Lookup by business name?

Yes. If you do not know the 11-digit ABN, you can search by the business name or the ACN instead. Because multiple businesses can use similar names, cross-check the entity type and location details to confirm you have found the right record.

What is the difference between an ABN and an ACN?

An ABN is an 11-digit number that identifies any business in Australia for tax and invoicing purposes. An ACN is a 9-digit number issued only to companies registered with ASIC. If a lookup result shows a company, the linked ACN normally appears alongside the ABN.

How do I update my ABN details?

Update your details online through the Australian Business Register using your myGovID, and do it within 28 days of any change. Changes such as a new address, contact details or business activities usually take effect immediately. A registered tax agent or a paper form are the alternatives.

Does an active ABN mean a business is legitimate?

An active ABN confirms the business is registered with the Australian government, which supports tax compliance and reduces fraud risk. It does not prove financial health, licences or quality. Sprintlaw advises treating it as a first identity filter and running further checks for significant transactions.
